Chief Minister of Kerala, for V S Achuthanandan is a fruit of his 67 years of social and political services to the preliterate of Kerala.  Born on 20th December 1923 as son of Mr. Sankaran and Mrs. Karthiyayni at Punnapra village in Kerala. All odds were against him during childhood. He lost his mother at the age of four. His father died when he turned 11. He had to quit his studies in 7th Standard due to scarcity.v s

He started his political life when he became Member in the Communist Party in 1940. In between he got a job in a coir factory. He couldn’t close his eyes the exploitation of workers and pathetic working conditions existed there. He started trade union activities by organizing workers.  Participation in Punnapra Vayalar struggle at the age of 23 was a turning point in his political career. He was arrested, tortured jailed by police. Later he was involved in various agitations against anti people and non-democratic policies of State and Central Governments during the period of emergency. He gave brave leadership for trade union and agrarian movements. Became Secretary of CPI (M) State Committee from 1980 to 1992. He was Convenor of Left Democratic Front from 1996 to 2000 and Leader of Opposition from 1992 to 1996.
 
At the age of 40 he married to Vasumathi , staff nurse at Allapuzha Medical College. They have two children, Asha and Arun Kumar.

As Chief Minister of Kerala

V S Achuthandan has the rare distinction of being the first ordinary factory worker turned Chief Minister of Kerala. Barely seven months in office, V S has to face the acid test of being the CM of Kerala. Whether it is Chikunguniya deaths, Mullaperiyar row, CD Piracy Issue VS has acted with quick wit and integrity.
